‘My Lovely Samsoon’ Ends With 50 Pct Ratings

This year’s biggest hit TV drama, “My Lovely Samsoon,’’ airing on Wednesdays and Thursdays, came to an end Thursday, surpassing 50 percent of the total viewer ratings. According to TNS Media Korea, the last episode of the MBC drama recorded a 50.5 percent viewer rating on a national basis. It reached 53.4 percent in metropolitan areas.

There have only been five drama series with viewer ratings above 50 percent since 2000.

The drama ended with a happy and yet realistic ending. Sam-soon (Kim Son-a) and Jin-hon (Hyun bin) get back together despite opposition from Jin-hon’s mother.

Hawaii ‘hallyu’

The popularity of these Asian soap operas has been growing across the United States, but it all began right here, when the programs first aired on KBFD. So it’s no surprise that local retailers would be the first to sell DVD box sets of such popular fare as “Stairway to Heaven” and “Hotelier.”

Tom Larsen, general manager for YA Entertainment, based in San Bruno, Calif., and exclusive distributor of English-subtitled Korean TV dramas in the United States, said the “hallyu,” or the Korean wave, definitely began in the islands.

‘Old maids’ dominate local TV screen

As it seems, the keyword for Korean TV dramas this year is “nocheonyeo” - the headstrong single women in their 30s, no longer mortified by the now common nickname. The word, meaning “old maid” and embracing females in their 30s, highlights the vast difference in perceptions between Korea and Western societies.

Following the popular TV series “My Lovely Sam-soon,” which ended in an overwhelming success in July, major broadcasters have been busy creating a “special” old maid of their own, aiming for the same amount of attention “Sam-soon,” the sassy heroine of the successful drama, had received.

Hyunbin to Become Esquire Hong Kong’s Cover Boy

Hyunbin, the hero of this summer’s hit drama “My Name is Kim Sam-soon,” will be on the cover of a special edition of the Hong Kong version of Esquire magazine.

A source said Hyunbin will adorn the men’s magazine’s 17th anniversary issue and has finished shooting two different versions.

The issue will also feature an article introducing him as a Korean actor likely to conquer Asia and an interview about his daily life, the source said.
