Hong Kong Magazine Defends Korean Wave

January 20, 2006

A backlash against the Korean Wave rushing through China in the country’s broadcasting and entertainment industry is narrow-minded and short-sighted, the Hong Kong current affairs magazine Yazhouzhoukan says.
In a cover story in its latest edition, the magazine said Korea’s strategy in the wake of its financial crisis to conquer attacking foreign markets with cultural products is paying off. “China should rise above anti-Korean sentiment. It should understand the significance of the cultural industry and learn from Korea’s strategies for developing the industry.”

According to the magazine, the Korean Wave not only enhanced the country’s image and increased popularity of Korean products but also affects the daily lives of Chinese people.

News on Korean Wave

Thus the Chinese version of novel on which the hit drama “My Name is Kim Sam-soon” was based has sold more than 50,000 copies since it was published in Shanghai in August. Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong has said he watches the historical soap “Daejanggeum (A Jewel in the Palace)” and said that Chinese literary experts should study the originality of Korean drama.

  8. Korean drama have not been true demands in Thailand. TV just tried to offer a new tihng, but failed. People still addicted to Chinese movies. My family knows no Korean names. These chinese movies addicts are a largest group. So there a korean hating wave as Japanese once critized. It is a wave, comes and goes, not like Chinese movie stones.

  9. TV 3 is airing Korean series in Thailand, forgetting one real taste. A recent survey revealed that this channel has lost large viewers, without giving reasons why. Another channel, which once promoted Korean movies, is airing a Chinese TV series, to scoop Chinese movie addicts. Now there are largest complaints and protests from chinese movie addicts on websites. They form Korean hating waves. Korean movies are very simple. Their men are not so good looking as Chinese and Japanese. This is another real aspect for Korean Wave. I don’t know any Korean stars. Citing Korean stars leads to a question “Who is he/she?” always. I did not watch “Dae Jung Gum”, which boasts to be the most popular, against the real feeling of TV fans. To be on air on TV does not mean large people are watching them, and this is particulary for Korean series.

  10. I love K-pop culture here in the U.S. My co-worker is Korean and she suggests which dramas, movies, music, etc. to watch and listen to since I’m so addicted to them. LOL. (with English subtitle of course). I’m planning to visit Korea with my husband for our yearly vacation trip and learning Korean as we speak. Korean language is so fascinating. Don’t even let me start on Korean food. Beautiful and tasty. I don’t understand about this Anti-Korean sentiments because other Asians at work seems to love anything Korea too. Kam Sa Hap Ni Da!
