‘My Name Is Kim Sam-soon’ Tops Ratings

My Lovely Sam Soon

The MBC drama “My Name is Kim Sam-soon” is recording viewer ratings of 37.7 percent, the highest for a drama this year, AGB Nielsen Media Research said Thursday. The program recorded the same ratings in a survey by TNS Media Korea, topping the year’s previous record of 36.2 percent set by KBS weekend drama “Letters to the Parents.”

The secret to the success of “Kim Sam-soon” is the blunt dialogue and the popularity with women, who drive ratings, of a protagonist many of them can sympathize with.

MBC Drama Sparks ‘Kim Sam-soon Syndrome’

The MBC TV drama hit “My Name Is Kim Sam-soon” is giving rise to a highly contagious condition identified as Sam-soon Syndrome that can empty entire streets of all signs of life and plunge sufferers into a topsy-turvy world where plain is beautiful and assertiveness does not put a woman beyond the pale.

The show, which hit the airwaves on June 1, recorded nationwide viewer ratings of 30.5 percent (TNS Media Korea) in just four episodes.

At her first filming as a cosmetics model, Kim Suna lost her previous plump image from the TV drama “My Name is Kim Samsoon,” and transformed her image into a sophisticated and provocative woman.

Hawaii ‘hallyu’

The popularity of these Asian soap operas has been growing across the United States, but it all began right here, when the programs first aired on KBFD. So it’s no surprise that local retailers would be the first to sell DVD box sets of such popular fare as “Stairway to Heaven” and “Hotelier.”

Tom Larsen, general manager for YA Entertainment, based in San Bruno, Calif., and exclusive distributor of English-subtitled Korean TV dramas in the United States, said the “hallyu,” or the Korean wave, definitely began in the islands.
