My Lovely Sam Soon Starts Usage of English

January 7, 2006

On Jan. 13, 1903, the first Koreans arrived in Hawai’i to work on the plantation fields as laborers. From here, they moved on to Mexico and the Mainland for other opportunities.

Koreans have been in Hawai’i for 102 years and have become an integral part of the community — so much so, in fact, that our tie with Korea is unique.

For example, did you know:

The state flower, the hibiscus, is also the Korean national flower?

The first Korean democratic president was a resident of Hawai’i and has a church that bears his name (Syngman Rhee)? He also spent his last days here in a care home.

Korean Fever Still Making Waves

THREE years after the Korean fever started spreading, it is still showing no sign of abating.

Just when we were about to chuck out our Winter Sonata VCDs and take a breather from the drama craze that swept Asia as early as 2003, Jewel In The Palace came along last year and turned us into TV addicts again.

Then, there was this curious phenomenon called Rain, who, despite bringing a downpour wherever he goes, still charmed a legion of screaming women both young and old.

K-pop fans in Singapore had it good.

We got to ogle Korean hunks all year round, from Won Bin in January to Jang Dong Gun early this month, as well as Lee Byung Hun and Kim Jae Won in February and Lee Dong Gun in July.

At movie premieres and film festivals, Korean beauties such as Lee Young Ae, Kim Hee Seon, Son Ye Jin and Kim So Yeon and hunks like Bae Yong Joon and Ji Jin Hee have also made their presence felt.

My Name is Kim Sam Soon Review by il_mare

December 8, 2005

If “Lovers in Paris” was THE romantic comedy to remember for the summer of 2004, then “My Name is Kim Sam Soon” (MNIKSS) is definitely the runaway hit for the summer of 2005.

Although “MNIKSS” has been compared to “Full House” because of the underlying nature of this kdrama was about a man and a woman faking their relationship with a secret contract, in spirit “MNIKSS” is totally different from “Full House”. Its massive appeal was attributed the great writing and how well many of the audience relate to the lead character Kim Sam Soon.

“My Name is Kim Sam Soon” is adapted from an internet novel from the same author who wrote “18:29″. Naming the lead character Kim Sam Soon, the writer had crafted this unattractive character with a totally uncool bumpkin name to match her pathetic existence. And the kdrama started off with SS getting dumped by her boyfriend of 3 years and losing her job on Christmas-eve. Sam Soon is hitting rock bottom of her life. But she continues to put up a strong front despite her failed relationships, and continue to lead her life held together by the fragile bonds of faith that things will look up.
